Expanded Metal is formed in an expanding press. The basic metal is simultaneously slit and cold-formed, which expands the slits into diamond shaped openings of uniform size and regularity. Expanded metal is a form of metal stock made by shearing a metal plate in a press, so that the metal stretches, leaving diamond-shaped voids surrounded by interlinked bars of the metal. The most common method of manufacture is to simultaneously slit and stretch the material with one motion. It is often shortened to exmet, which also refers to a commercial firm by the same name that manufactures expanded metal. Expanded Metal may be produced from carbon steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and a variety of copper. Expanded Metal has thousands of applications for enclosure, protection, support, decoration and filtration, including grills, fencing, walkways, furniture, etc.
Types :
- Flattened Expanded Metal is manufactured by passing the standard expanded sheet through a cold-roll reducing mill.
- Standard Expanded Metal offers high rigidity in a variety of sizes and weights. The angles of the diamond strands allow maximum air circulation and distribute stress on the metal to supporting frames.
- Expanded Metal Grating is fabricated from low carbon steel plates and is ideal for use wherever a strong, durable, lightweight surface is needed.
Expanded Metal Uses :
- Air and Fluid Filters
- EMI/RFI Shielding
- Battery Cells
- Ventilation Systems
- Strainers
- Partitions
- Outdoor Furniture
- Speaker Grills
- Security Walls, Ceilings, Floors and Doors
- Machine and Window Guards
- Fencing
- Shelving and Racks
- Walkways and Stair Treads
- Greenhouse Benches
